How to Watch NASA’s Historic Splashdown:

NASA’s Artemis II mission is set to conclude as its four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—return to Earth after a groundbreaking journey around the far side of the Moon.

After spending 10 days aboard the Orion spacecraft, the crew is scheduled to begin re-entry at 7:33 p.m. ET, with splashdown expected at approximately 8:07 p.m. ET in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, California. NASA will broadcast the event live, allowing viewers worldwide to witness this historic moment.

This mission marks the first time in over 50 years that humans have traveled to the Moon’s vicinity. The crew reached a distance of about 252,760 miles from Earth, farther than any humans have gone before. To put that into perspective, it’s roughly equivalent to traveling between New York City and Los Angeles nearly 100 times—inside a spacecraft no larger than two minivans.

The primary goal of Artemis II was to gather critical data for future lunar missions. Throughout the journey, astronauts tested the Orion spacecraft’s systems, including communications, navigation, and overall performance in deep space, ensuring readiness for upcoming missions that aim to land humans on the Moon again.

Re-entry and splashdown are among the most challenging phases of the mission. During the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022, Orion’s heat shield—made of AVCOAT and designed to withstand temperatures nearing 5,000 degrees—experienced unexpected charring and cracking. Although NASA confirmed it would have still protected a crew, the issue prompted extensive analysis and improvements.

As Artemis II returns, attention remains focused on the spacecraft’s heat shield performance. With successful splashdown, the mission will mark a major step forward in humanity’s return to deep space exploration.
